The role of parents in a child’s success and failures

I am at a point of my life and career that I can take a guess how a young chess player’s career will shape up just by meeting their parents. Yes, this is just my assumption however I have been pretty correct most of the times till now. I have also spoken to many top coaches personally and they have also suggested the same. I have also attached two screenshots from a research paper conducted by a top sports body just incase you want to read.

I believe a player, their parents, their coach and mentors together form a team and a player will only reach a certain point without the best efforts of the entire team and this is specially true for young players. As much as the success of a player depends on the team, I will take the liberty to say that even the failures of a player is directly proportional.

For me achievements are important but somewhat materialistic. I love to meet players who are excited to talk about their game and personally I don’t care if they will become National champions or World champions but I can be sure that they will be wonderful sportspersons and more importantly amazing humans. I am fortunate enough to get to meet some amazing parents from the world of chess everyday and I get inspired to share their stories.

Last day, I was invited to the home of Deekshitha Modipalli who recently did something incredible. She went from 1985 ELO- 2469 in a matter of thirty days. I saw many posts and articles about her and I was intrigued about the story and I wanted to know more. This is our interview with Deekshitha. We did a full interview where I came to know about her full chess story, he favorite trophy, her goal in life and more. Do you know she is currently India #3 and World #16?

I spoke to her coach IM Krishna Teja and her father Sheshadri Naidu, who were kind enough to invite me to their wonderful home. I felt the warmth and the positive energy throughout the house. Deekshitha’s mother Rajani cooked some amazing lunch and after eating my heart out, I sat down with the family and Krishna to know their story. Deekshitha’s parents Sheshadri and Rajani’s way of raising the kids is something absolutely inspiring. They came back multiple time after falling and Deekshitha’s journey is a true reflection of what I have stated above. Checkout their interview here.
